I have installed Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon (3.8.9) within VMware Workstation 14 Player (version 14.1.3 build-9474260) running on a Windows 10 host (1803 build 17134.285). Sound does not work, although it works perfectly when I run Windows 7 in the same VM. The sound device detected by Linux is Creative Sound blaster CT2518. Can anyone suggest how I can overcome this problem?
In the Mint VM, install the Pulse Audio mixer (pavucontrol). It gives you much more granular control of the audio settings than most default volume control applications.
I already have pavucontrol installed, and it has found the Creative Labs CT2518. When I test sound with pavucontrol open on the Output Devices tab, the Advanced bar shows that the sound is being detected but no sound can be heard.
Obviously there is something else that I need to install, but what is it?
I followed the link and installed the Alsamixer which detects the host sound card as an Ensoniq which is not muted. The output of a Terminal command lspci gives the multimedia audio controller as Ensoniq ES1371/ES1373 / Creative Labs CT2518. These names are synonyms as Ensoniq was acquired by Creative Technology.
There is still no sound from Linux Mint, so I have not made any progress. Any further thoughts?
Problem solved. I came across a solution at https://communities.vmware.com/thread/421023
This involved editing the Linux Mint vmx file by changing its last line to;
sound.fileName="-1"
and adding a new line:
sound.autodetect="TRUE"
This worked perfectly, and I now have full sound
