Newbie to VMware Player and Linux Mint: Are my questions in the right forum!?

I am a complete newbie to Linux (mint 16). I also am completely new to VMware Player, in which I am using the Linux OS. My Host computer is Windows XP. I have quite a few questions regarding proper setup configurations, and PC security issues. I don't want to offend by putting my questions in the wrong forum!

Where should a Linux newbie, who is also a newbie to VMware post questions??! When I saw this forum, it got my attention, since many linux savvy and helpful members may not be familiar with VMware player, and my questions are still pretty intertwined with each other. On the other hand, my knowledge is very basic. I probably require quite a bit of patience due to my lack of information!

Hello,

The sub-forum seems appropriate. Do you have any specific question on the issue?

Regards.

virtual machine will not open in non-admin user account

Thank you PrinceCruise.
Yes. I seem to be unable to start my virtual machine from my non-admin user account.
I had to open vmware as an administrator for the virtual machine - Linux Mint 16 Petra to start.
In addition several errors show up on the right side of the black window while the guest is loading. They scroll pretty fast, but I was able to read something about being unable to use monitors or something like that.
I have logs dated today that I assume show my activity in my virtual machine folder.
I can post the logs, but they are very long.
I want to be able to open linux as a virtual OS in VMware. My host is Windows XP.
I don't know if this is a vmware or linux mint problem.
Can you advise? Thank you!

I think your other post gave the clue of the wrong user.

Uninstall vmplayer maybe and install it to the correct normal windows paths like /programs. Don't install to a users area.

Some windows programs might say something on install like do you want users to run program. I don't think vmplayer does but say yes to that to allow standard users to run. Each user would have their vm's placed in the location you noted on other post. My Virtual Machines or such.

Thank you again, Jefro.
2 more questions:
1. If I uninstall & reinstall vmware, will it affect the guest that is in the My Virtual Machines folder which was created by Vmware when I created the new virtual machine form the .iso?

2. regarding errors I am still getting, please see this post at about 10:17 PM-
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ie-4175503278/

I don't want to be posting the same question in 2 different threads.

I haven't used Windows XP in ages so not aware of any problems which may be specific to Windows logon system. But yeah, I'd suggest too to clean reinstall Vmware player to programs and keep the virtual machine's folder in a non-system partition.

And
1. Before uninstalling, just move the virtual machines to other place.

After that please update if that seems to help or not. And lets keep the discussion at one place, you decide which one. Good luck.

I can't offer any help as I've never had success with VMWare on linux personally ( none really on windows either come to think of it. ) That being said I would suggest look at virtualbox in the repos. I found it more user friendly and it hasn't failed me yet. Is open source and does the same thing for the average user.

I don't believe the client will be deleted unless it asks some question. To be sure, just move the entire folder that has the vm files. Should be about 5 of them or more depending on some things.
