XP 32bit Home Edition runs in VirtualBox, I've been running it for the last 6 yrs, starting in Ubuntu 12.04 host, then Mint 10, 11, and 12 hosts, and now Arch host for the last 3.5 yrs. All my hosts have been and are 64bit. Your XP install CD might require a bootable Floppy - remember Windows 95, 98 and some early XP installs? If you don't have an old bootable MSDOS floppy, boot your new VBox instance with a GPARTED (or other linux) disk and format the vdi to msdos make bootable, then install the XP CD and see if it will run.

EDIT: chances are there are some Qt4 dev tools that will read your A/D converter too - I keep my XP VBox around for converting VHS to DVD via Diamond A/D-USB converter although one of the Qt4 tools will actually read and show the signal in Linux, it has been a long long time since i tried the Qt4 thing and never figured out how to redirect it to burn DVDs
should and will are two different operands however, really need to know a lot more about the steps taken setting up VirtualBox and the desired XP install.
I realize too that this thread was from September with no more feedback from originator. My original XP Home is SP2 and I didn't need the floppy but still have it too as it came with the original pc XP was installed on in 2002. I have an SP3 update CD that I ran after installing the OS.
