kvm: Reset root password on guests

I'm running KVM on my ubuntu box, and have create a couple of linux guests. I need to reset the passwords on both of the guests. The problem is that I can't access grub, so I don't get to boot into single user mode. Does anyone know how to access grub on a KVM guest?

Another option would be to boot kvm using a live linux iso image, and then mount the virtual hard disk and make the changes to reset the passwords.

Yeah, that would work too. But I'd very much like to get the grub thing going, just to have that as an option.
