Issue with copy/paste text between VM and host

I have been using VMWare Player, now called Workstation/Player at home for non-commercial purposes for YEARS. A great tool. Over the past couple of weeks I have been upgrading my physical and virtual machines to CentOS 7.5 from 7.4. Always an adventure. Here is my anomoly...

The host is running CentOS 7.5 with the Mate desktop - originally 7.2 and upgraded over the years. VMWare Workstation/Player is 12.5.7.

I created a VM thus (as I have been doing for years)

CentOS 7.5 - minimal install
yum install yum-priorites epel-release
set CentOS-Base to priority-1, epel to priority=10
yum groupinstall "X Window system" mate-desktop-environment
yum update
systemctl set-default graphical.target

This gives me a nice clean Mate environment. However, I can not copy/paste text between the VM and the host nor to another VM on the same host. This has never been an issue before CentOS 7.5.

I also tried the following:

1 - Create a VM with CentOS 7.5 Gnome desktop - copy/paste works
2 - Create a VM with CentOS 7.5 Gnome desktop + mate-desktop-environment and switch to Mate - copy/paste works
3 - Create a VM with Ubuntu Mate 18.04 - copy/paste works
4 - Upgraded an old CentOS 7.4 + mate test VM (built as described above) to 7.5 - copy/paste works

I am at a loss. open-vm-tools is current on the offending VM - it comes from CentOS-Base so it does not seem to be a clobber from epel (which yum-priorities should prevent in any case.) Any suggestions?

TIA,

Ken

p.s. I upgraded Workstation/Player to 12.5.9. No change. I just built another CentOS 7.5 + X Window System + Mate - copy/paste does not work

Just a quick update - I installed the VMWare's vm-tools rather than the open-vm-tools from the CentOS-Base repo. No change. Still cannot copy/paste text between VM and host.

And an update to my update. While verifying which repo had open-vm-tools (for my prior update), I came across a package open-vm-tools-desktop. Sounded interesting. I installed it, rebooted and now I can copy and paste text. Not sure why it was installed with Gnome and with 7.4 regardless but at least I am now a copying and pasting fool. Too bad I cannot thank myself for answering my own question

My pleasure. This was, I hope, the last of my CentOS 7.4 - 7.5 upgrade adventures.
