Installing Debian 7.8.0 on virtualbox piix4 smbus question
I had an error message piix4_smbus ... smbus base address uninitialized.
I searched for a solve and found that if I blacklist i2c_piix4
it solves the problem.
My question since I'm new to this is. What exactly did I do and what exactly is this.
Some googleing I found that virtualbox does not have an smbus? Since that seems to explain that, fine, but what exactly is the smbus if anyone can explain this error.
btw - as I said, the blacklist solved the error (I'm just trying to make sure it's safe and that I know what I'm doing).
Virtual machines are software versions based on real hardware for most of the parts. You generally can select the types of virtual hardware you wish when you create the client. There is some integration with your real hardware too. Many of the distro builders use virtual machines to test their builds. I find it kind of odd that you have to black list this. I've used vm's for decades and they keep getting better.
Can't say why your set up needed but if you searched it and others fixed it with the blacklist then it's just one of those things.
Might as well move up to Debian 8.
Consider testing one of the pre-made virtual machines available for downloading too.
