Thumbs up Install VirtualBox on Fedora 12 LXDE

Hi everyone,

I recently installed Fedora 12 LXDE on my net-book and would just like to share my experience for future reference.

After downloading the .rpm and installing via terminal i received the following error:

Code:
[root@localhost X11]# rpm -i /home/user/Downloads/VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.16_86992_fedora18-1.i686.rpm
warning: /home/user/Downloads/VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.16_86992_fedora18-1.i686.rpm: Header V4 DSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 98ab5139: NOKEY

Creating group 'vboxusers'. VM users must be member of that group!

No precompiled module for this kernel found -- trying to build one. Messages
emitted during module compilation will be logged to /var/log/vbox-install.log.

Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ]
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules                      [FAILED]
  (Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)
After searching the internet for hours trying different techniques i finally managed to figure out the correct procedure as it seemed that quite a few people were also having the same issue.

Ref: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

After paying attention to the following note right at the bottom of the page,

Quote:
Note: Users of Fedora/Mandriva might want to install the dkms package (not available on openSUSE) to ensure that the VirtualBox host kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt and vboxnetadp) are properly updated if the linux kernel version changes during the next kernel update.
I must say however i did feel quite blunt as it is generally wise to "READ THE FINE PRINT" Any way they did not give any real clear instruction but in the end at least the problem was solved.

The following solved the issue:

After adding the following the /etc/yum.repos.d/
Code:
[virtualbox]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - VirtualBox
baseurl=http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/fedora/$releasever/$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc
ran updatedb and reinstalled VirtualBox using
Code:
rpm -i VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.16_86992_fedora18-1.i686.rpm
Run the following:
Code:
yum install dkms
Doing the above successfully you should receive the following output:

Code:
arning: VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.16_86992_fedora18-1.i686.rpm: Header V4 DSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 98ab5139: NOKEY

with fedora 12 a dead version and that you had to use a fedora 18 rpm on fedora 12

would it not have been better to install fedora 19
rather than use a version of fedora that is 7 versions and 3 years out of date
and has been unsupported for a very long time

Fedora 19 LXDE Spin

Hi John VV,

Thank you and apologies for the confusion. It was done on Fedora 19 LXDE Spin and not Fedora 12 as stated earlier in my subject.

Regards
Marios
