Hi, I was wondering if there is a distro devoted solely to C++ development?
One that is already packed with 3rd party libraries such as mesa/opengl (and the various windowing libs), KDE libs, sdl, allegro, networking libs, gtk (panda, gtk+, etc), and such.
Either meant as an image or bootable CD would be fine, although it will be run as an image.
I would prefer to have a minimal X server that can run what is coded and Code::Blocks, but not really much else.
I doubt there is a distro that out of the box fulfills all your needs. I would look into spinning your own live CD with something like Ubuntu Customization Kit or SUSE Studio. I haven't used the latter but UCK is quick and pretty self-explanatory. In either case you can have an Ubuntu or OpenSuse image customized with whatever software you want.
I use virtual machines running Arch Linux for all my development environments. Arch doesn't split the out headers into -dev packages which is convenient, and PKGBUILD files are a doddle to write to produce packages for your own stuff or 3rd party stuff not in the AUR.
Arch Linux does very little patching of libs and tools, so your code will never be dependent on some obscure side affect or feature specific to Arch. And the libs are very up to date
The installation produces a base Linux environment, from there you can use the package manager to add as little or as much as you want.
Thanks! I will take a look at Arch. SUSE Studio looks promising, but I think a more average (base?) install would work better for my needs this time. I will keep it in mind though.
