I installed virtualbox and when i start it, it wont give a GUI
Hi to all,
I am remco and i am new here, and i have a question about virtulbox, i installed virtualbox 6 the way it is described on the oracle website.
Butt when i installed it the first time, it messed up my grub, and had to reinstall grub.
I don't know what virtualbox needs to do in my grub?
and when i start virtualbox from the command line i get of errors like this, and copied some lines from a lot of the same output.
Code:
Qt WARNING: Qt: Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

I have the same messages and issue on 14.2 with VB 6.0. I installed the version from the Oracle site and the GUI or VM's will not display, although they appear to running. The VBoxSDL version does work, but it appears to have less functionality than the normal GUI VM.
I installed VB by adding VB to my sources.list an adding the trusted key.
I started it as root, and user and got the same out put.
oh yeah for i forget, i had once the process running, but now i can't find any process anywhere.
Hi speck,
Maybe i try the VBoxSDL, but i have been looking around, and i have some other options.
P.S.@ Frankbel and Speck,
1. The options i have, to fix this VB, i will try that!!
2. I saw some things about containers, is this a option ?
I believe it is, but i have to need more info?
I will get in to that today.
3. I saw on the Ubuntu site something about Ubuntu Core, for the Raspberry Pi, and Ubuntu Core.
And ihave been thinking about buying a Raspberry Pi, so it will be nice to play around with Ubuntu Core.
And if you wanne virtualize Ubuntu Core on your desktop, you have to use kernel based Virtualization like KVM.
This is has totally nothing to do with VB, but can they be run side by side VB and KVM?
i am not sure what state your system is in now; first, an operating system reinstall might be in order (assuming it's still fresh and you don't lose much customisation).
from now on, understand that software installation works in a fundamentally different way than on other OSs - it is centered around your distro's package management.
you typically (*) do NOT install stuff from the www.
Yeah i use stable.
I used the information on the original oracle site this one https://www.virtualbox.org.
I also have the backports repositories installed, but the only thing i see in the package manager, is that before backports it say's "not automatic" maybe this is the problem with updating.
The only different thing i can see is that oracle put the source in sources.list, and the website of debian, puts it in sources.list.d.
So that is both the same way, but a clean install seems a good option, or a other way to totally remove VB for now and install KVM.
And maybe do it a other way with the alternate server CD from Ubuntu, you can set up a VMware server during installation i did that a few years a go and works perfect. The alternate vmware option on the cd seems to go obsolete
Or what i mentioned before go for a new debian install with KVM, for testing things for/with Ubuntu Core, and the Raspberry Pi.
for now i hope still to that we can fix this issue.
Thanks

you use debian stable.
make it a habit to search for solution to your problems on debian wiki first, always. not the wild web.
also about how to install a newer (a.k.a. "backported") kernel.
the site is difficult to navigate, and sometimes outdated (but you can always find dates at the bottom of each article).
The errors that you listed are all warnings, not errors. Could you have a look through the output and post any error output here.
Also, can you please paste the output from:
Code:
dpkg -l *virtualbox* | grep ii
Just a note that v6.0 is just out of the factory (17 December) so may still be a bit buggy. You might be better to wipe that version and try the more tried and trusted v5.2.
Wat i posted above was the output some of QListWidget and UIToolsView and a lot of the same lines like this one here below, and then counting upwards to 950 or something.
Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 444, resource id: 167772165, major code: 19 (DeleteProperty), minor code: 0
This is the output of dpkg, ii virtualbox-6.0 6.0.0-127566~Debian~stretch amd64 Oracle VM VirtualBox
Yeah probabley a good idee to wipe 6 and go to 5.2 good option.
I was thinking of KVM with Ubuntu, but if KVM is also shipped with debian, what i didn't know i will give it a try.
probable i can vertialize, Ubuntu Core as well than.
I did the this, i installed debian with KDE as desktop, because i thought xfce with debian was a little bit buggy to.
then i followed these instructions here wiki.debian.org/KVM and it works perfect together.
Think KVM is much better, then VirtualBox, the only thing during installation is, i didn't get output by the virsh list --all command but that is normal i think, it is i didn't made, a virtual machine just jet so it should be empty?!
There's are all so good resources for virtual information and disk images, located here https://openstack.org
