Fedora 18 Gnome switched to fallback mode after installing VirtualBox guest additions

Hello!

I'm currently running a Fedora 18 virtual machine, using VirtualBox (v4.2.10) as virtualization software on a Windows 7 host.

After installing Fedora, the Gnome 3 Shell environment worked perfectly fine. However after I installed the VirtualBox guest additions, Gnome went into 'fallback' mode, and refuses to go back to 'standard' mode.

I haven't changed or installed anything else other than the VB guest additions prior to the problem.

Some of the things I've tried so far is to disable SELinux, and a reinstallation of the Gnome Shell, unfortunately without luck.

What could be the cause of the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Fallback mode occurs when you don't have enough memory to run regular Gnome 3.

Are you starting the vbox kernel and process on bootup?

My guess would be that Guest Additions took just enough extra memory to cause this. Running top in a terminal should give you some hints where the memory is going.

Hello frank, sorry for my late response.

The virtual machine has been assigned 2 GB of memory, and on average it only consumes about 25% of it.
Is there perhaps something else in the Guest Additions that could be the cause of the issue?

I think this isnt correct (or at least not entirely).

Gnome 3's "standard" mode requires hardware acceleration. If its missing, you will get fallback mode.
I assume that the OS had a working video driver OOTB. Guest Additions is a bunch of drivers too, maybe it buggered the driver that was working.

I've been browsing through the VB User Manual searching for more information about 3D acceleration for guests, and I may have found the cause of the issue. The VB User Manual states that;

Quote:

With this feature, if an application inside your virtual machine uses 3D features through the OpenGL or Direct3D 8/9 programming interfaces, instead of emulating them in software (which would be slow), VirtualBox will attempt to use your host's 3D hardware. This works for all supported host platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris), provided that your host operating system can make use of your accelerated 3D hardware in the first place.

Quote:

... instead of emulating them in software (which would be slow) ...
I assumed that this is what it has been doing while the Guest Additions weren't installed yet. After I installed the Guest Additions it tried to use the host's 3D hardware, but for some reason it fails to do so. (3D acceleration is enabled in the VM settings, and the video memory is set to maximum (128 MB)).

To test this assumption, I tried to disable the 3D acceleration in the VM settings (to force it to switch back to software emulation)... and it worked, Gnome 3 switched back to standard mode!

So in conclusion, when 3D acceleration is enabled with the Guest Additions installed, it tries to use the host 3D hardware (as expected), but it just fails to do so.

But I still can't figure out why (3D acceleration is working perfectly fine on the host OS)... what could be the cause of this?

Do you have the kernel headers installed? In order to be able to install the additions, you will need them.

Thomas. 04-06-2013 11:29 AM

The kernel headers are installed.

gradinaruvasile 04-06-2013 12:53 PM

Well, unfortunately the lspci output thats purpose was to see which kernel modules are loaded for each device doesnt show any loaded modules for the video device. So no luck here.

A typical way to see if direct rendering is active in a Linux OS is

Code:

glxinfo
This will give a lot of extraneous output, but the interesting parts are the following entries (copy paste from my computer):

Code:

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 7560D
OpenGL version string: 4.2.12002 Compatibility Profile Context 9.012

"direct rendering" says if there are 3d capabilities available to the x server.
The OpenGL strings are interesting because they identify the rendering driver.

Also, the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file has information about the situation and most likely contains the loaded modules for the video card.

If you can provide these infos for both situations, maybe will get to the cause of this.

Thomas. 04-06-2013 06:38 PM

This is the result in fallback mode (3D acceleration enabled):

glxinfo (I included the rest of the output as well because I noticed quite a lot of OpenGL warnings, I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I thought it'd be best to include it):

From what i see there, if the hardware acceleration is enabled, the virtualbox driver indeed is compiled and loads at statrtup:

Code:

(II) Module vboxvideo: vendor="Oracle Corporation"
But it has some issues it seems.

Otherwise, the vbox driver is not loaded, but instead the built-in vmware driver is loaded and it uses software acceleration.

Try updating your system and reinstall the additions.

Sorry for the delay.

I've tried your suggestion to update the system and reinstallation of the Guest Additions, but unfortunately the problem persists.
Even a complete reinstall of the virtual machine didn't do much.

I've been searching the web a lot last week searching for a solution and it appears that more people experience a similar issue, but the solutions they provide does not work for me.

I'm completely out of ideas, is there perhaps anything left I could try to do?
