I have been running this Dell on a LinuxMint 17 32 bit live usb flash drive. No hard drive. 1 GB memory. When system usage gets to around 500 MBs it freezes, using the live flash drive. I installed the Mint OS to another 8GB Toshiba flash drive, so it acts like a regular system except for the USB BUS lag. That is to be expected. So it is acting like a usb OS with a persistance drive. I also encrypted the harddrive/flashdrive and the home folder. When I first boot up the computer, I punch in two different passcodes. One for the encrypted flashdrive, and the second one to access the computer itself. While surfing the internet the memory usage went up to 750 MBs and it frooze. I think because of multi program conflict in the USB pipline.
1 Gig is recommended for most live-cd/usb. You should use Puppy or AntiX, there are a few more but those 2 actually come to mind.

Hellow linuxquestions.org community. Right now I am running off a 8GB Toshiba USB drive with Linux Mint 17 32 bit, FULL INSTALL.The files are 6.2 GB. And 947 MB free. Not a live USB OS. Jefro. I was using a live USB mint, until the other computer stopped booting, which was just a day or so ago. Now it is a full install USB mint. When I mentioned persistance storage, I said the full install was like it.

I had previously downloaded virtualbox4.3_4.3.14-95030~Ubuntu~raring_i386.deb, and when I install it, I get a notice " An older version is available in the software channel
Generally you are recommended to install the version from the software channel, since it is usually better supported.

OK The package Installer comes up. I click install. Now it asks for the logon password. Now I get another message, "File not found. You tried to install a file that does not(or no longer) exist. I click ok to that. The actual virtualbox linux program is still there. It has not been deleted. OK , the Package Installer came up again, but this time it was empty. So I go to file>open. I open up the virtual box program once again.Package Installer sees it. OK , I click Install Package once again.Installing...I get what looks like a package installer terminal

Selecting previously unselected package virtualbox-4.3.

Errors were encountered while processing:
virtualbox-4.3

At the end I get this message: gdebi-gtk Failed to completely install all dependencies To fix this run 'sudo apt-get install-f in a terminal window

Package Installer comes up again, and asks if I want to reinstall the package. I say yes It says Installing dependencies, but nothing is happening.

In the terminal I ran sudo apt-get install-f, and I got

OK I ran a DuckDuckGo search, How to install Virtual box on linux mint 17
I went to http://www.itzgeek.com/how-tos/virtu...#axzz3M0NtL3eh

In the terminal I copied sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
They want my password. I try to punch in the password, and nothing

Jefro you said 1. You should be running full installs of an OS to usb drives. Any live image will bork on virtualbox. It needs to change the kernel and you can't do that in a live boot no matter if you have persistence.

Make a real install to a usb and then try installing virtualbox via software manager. Configure it per your OS if needed by running scripts or changing user permissions.

Jefro I was using a live USB version of linux mint 17 for many months . Then when the Acer did not boot a day or so ago, I clicked the icon on the desktop on the Dell computer that says to install mint. I went through the whole FULL INSTALL process. I put it on a 8 GB USB flash drive. I am using that FULL INSTALL Mint 8 GB USB flash drive right now. It is working better than the live version. I installed Vine on it. Is that what you are talking about? I get the idea that maybe you thought I tried to install virtual box on a live usb mint version.

When you say real install, I think you mean FULL INSTALL. OK I did that.I just showed you

I tried to start software manager, and will not start.

I stopped for a bit

I got this message when I tried to install YUMI. Software index is broken

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

I did not update the system. I have alot to do. I guess I was trying to rush myself. Thank you for responses. I shall keep pluggen on.

YUMI is not a real install.

What I do is take a system real or virtual and only have the USB and installer iso/cd to use. The installer puts the system on the usb just like it would do for any internal hard drive.

hellow I find this interesting. My last post at linuxquestions.org did not go out to everybody. I got it through an email contact. I guess the management at linuxquestions censored my last thread. Management should put a button on the thread saying something like " stopping this thread even though it was not solved." Virtual box is still not working on the Acer.
