Centos and Vmware
 

Hello Guys,
my second request in the forum,
i have Centos Linux server runing just fine,
i want to install Vmware server to install Virtual machines inside,
so my question is if there is something here can help me with this?

Why not use Xen or KVM instead? Both come with CentOS 5.4 and Xen came with all CentOS 5 versions before that. They are both virtualization products.

if i use Xen or KVM can i install OS like ( XP, 2003...) in?
if yes please explain how

Yes.

If you do a Google search for "KVM" "windows" "guests" "CentOS" the first link that comes up is a Wiki that seems to have quite a bit of info. I didn't examine the other links - I'll leave that to you.

Also if you do it without specifying "CentOS" you'll see info for Fedora and RHEL both of which would likely be helpful for your CentOS install.

first take a look at VMWare site? There is plenty of documentation for installation and configuration.
Is there any special which you can't find there? Do you have any specific trouble to get it work?

what are you trying to say ?!

It means if you only have one tool then you try to make that tool serve for all your "fixes" even if it really isn't the best tool to use. For some applications you might make it work (e.g. pounding in a wood screw *might* work but it would be so much better to get a screwdriver and maybe even a drill for a small pilot hole).

Either he's suggesting you want to use VMWare because that's what you're familiar with even though it isn't the default "tool" for CenOS or he's suggesting that I recommended the default Xen or KVM rather than answering your original Q because those are the "tools" I'm familiar with. Only The Shadow knows for sure. :D

P.S. There's nothing wrong with your original Q or wanting to use VMWare - I daresay there's a hell of a lot more VMWare installations IN USE than XEN and KVM combined at this point.

VMWare Server is very easy to install. Instructions can be found here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/vmware...t-version.html or http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_server_centos5.0 (btw, that was a quick "install vmware server in centos" from google. Top 2 hits)

CentOS / VMware Server works very well from my experience.

Right - no one was saying it doesn't. I was just pointing out that KVM/XEN are default tools in RHEL/CentOS so you don't have to go get them like you do VMWare. As I noted above there's nothing wrong with wanting to use VMWare though.

It all reminds me of the question I asked a guy years ago when we were using cpio for backups and others were recommending tar and he used tar himself. Since he worked for the UNIX vendor I asked him what the difference was and he said "religion". What he meant was that people will form opinions and defend them as "best" or "correct" when in reality either solution works and its simply differences in implementation and perceptions.

You'll see similar "religious" discussions about why emacs is great even though all non-apostates know that vim is best. ;)

i've read everywhere, but it seems Centos 5.4 has bug!!!!
dont know if its true so still waiting to read more and someone can confirm me this

as read somewhere seems Centos 5.4 has bug runing Vmware 2.0.2, alot of people facing the same issue,
so hoping someone has beter idea to install it in 5.4 :)
