I finally got my little server running properly and it is headless in the router closet. I am thinking about running a Minecraft server VM. I am worried about bridging the vm to the ethernet though as if it goes wrong I have to move the server back into my room where I have a monitor mounted on the wall (looking back mounting on wall was a mistake). Is there anything I need to worry about specifically or is it just follow the prompts?
Basically want my server to maintain it's static IP, and have a VM with a separate static IP.
What kind of problems are you anticipating? As long as the host is up you should have console/gui access to your vm via virt-manager. With a headless centos kvm host server I have no problems using virt-manager via ssh X forwarding, I just have to remember to start virt-manager as root.
If you don't want to use x-forward you can determing the vnc port used by your vm using virsh, and forward that port over ssh, then open a vnc client to localhost:<forwarded port>
If the kvm host dies, well then you'll need to move the machine, or what I did was got an el-cheapo small monitor cheap from ebay and hook it up to the server for emergencies. My server is rack-mounted som moving it wouldn't be an easy chore.
I had forgotten about posting this. I have solved it by just taking the plunge and creating a bridge through virt-manager to the kvm on the little server. The one guide I was reading for Debian and bridging I wasn't entirely clear on what would happen to the host eth0... whether or not it would maintain the proper static ip in particular as that is my only access through ssh.
My vm is running a minecraft server at the moment.
