Are file operation on virtio-9p mounts blocking?

When using virtio-9p or virtio-fs to share a directory between a host and a guest VM, are file operation done from host processes on that shared directory (e.g. mkdir) blocked until the guest receives the change?

Does that mean that the host process is blocked until the kernel schedules the guest for execution?
