need suggestions for linux workshop
hi guys,
we are conducting a linux workshop in october to promote the use of linux among the students of our university( which is in Chennai, India ). we will be distributing live distros, giving demonstrations regarding use and installation of linux, and much more. could anyone please give me some ideas as to how we can improve the penetration of linux usage through this workshop. thanks in advance kushal... |
Have a look at it from a marketing prospect.
Linux is the product and the students are your customers. Why would they choose linux. Where could they use Linux for. Is it linux they use or is it open software which is freely available o linux. Could they use linux knowledge as a means of future employment, it's still new and starting now give's you the edge. Begin a brain storm session with students and make list with a few real main points and make a presentation. |
Mass installs are the best way to do it.
Get a whole load of your friends together, that know a little something, and hold this workshop, but do one better than just having some distros - install them!!!! See if your uni will provide you with some CD-R's (tax writeoff in India?) - and burn a boatload of all different distros. Limit yourself, there are too many out there to have them all. Get together a "menu" of sorts, listing the differences between each of them, and offer people a choice of the distro they would like to have installed, based on their needs....... I would use the following: SuSE Slackware Fedora Core Mandrake Gentoo Yellow Dog (For Mac people) Give them a copy of their chosen distro, and install it for them!!!!! Be sure to explain, that should they decide to switch back, it is their responsibility to figure out how to do so, but, who in their right mind would? Also, I would be sure to compile a small pamphlet, containing some info, and useful links for newbies......(lq.org should be at the top of this list!!!!) |
