LUG: New Brunswick, Canada
Just got back from a wonderful Maritime vacation where I was able to promote Linux to a very disgruntled Windows user. Does anyone know if there is a LUG close to St. Stephen, NB or a Linux user who could get him started? TIA.

I know very little about the geography (or whether these are still active), but these 2 show as being in New Brunswick:
http://www.cluecan.ca/groups-tillug http://monctonlug.sourceforge.net/ Hopefully they aren't too far away! |
Thanks, Xavier P. Both of these sites have been inactive for a number of years.

It may be worth, as a start point, contacting the local university (or other large educational establishment) to see if they have a LUG active or if they know of one.
|
I've emailed the local university and hope to make a contact there.

Any news regarding Linux contacts in New Brunswick?
Did you have any success making contacts in New Brunswick. It is likely that we will move from BC to NB sometime in the next few months. To date I've had no success finding Linux or FOSS contacts there.

Hi, george5:
Got your email and will answer both there and here. I had no replies to my queries. Looks as if things haven't changed. Good luck with your move. Perhaps you could start a LUG and advertise for members. cybergal |

I am a Slackware user in NB.

Are you aware of any active Linux and/or F/L OSS groups in NB, especially in the Saint John area? I am an Ubuntu user but would be interested in why you prefer Slackware.
|
I am not aware of any really.... i have seen a website or 2 from browsing around but i did not make contact. I got into slackware to build websites, and do light tech work. As i became fluent, it became more evident that i picked the right os. very laid back philosophy and i believe the reputation as a solid os is very true. at work,we have a couple of linux boxes running a vm and we have a bsd firewall, so having a good system at home is essential...

Hey, I'm in Saint John and travel close to St Steven fairly often. I've looked for linuxers in my area with no luck. If your friend is looking for assistance or just someone to talk linux to we could hook up via g+ or email.
Not giving out that info in pubic but we could exchange via PM or sumthin' Edit: for any interested that posted to this thread my email is my username here and I use gmail -please feel free to message me. Maybe take care not to sound spammy so it doesn't get filtered. ;) |
I am also a Slackware user in New Brunswick.
I've been on the mailing list at http://monctonlug.sourceforge.net/ for about two years. In the summer of 2012, there were some stirrings of activity, but nothing lately. I think there are still a few people on the list though. It would be nice to get something going. |
Been away for a few days and will be back in a few more. I've so far found the best linux discussion to be on google plus - add me google.com/+JayElem I promise I'm in no way affiliated with The big G :)
Like I said, I'll be home in a few days when I'll be able to engage with you fine folk. o/ |
Have arrived in NB and thanks to fiver22
Yes, thanks to fiver22 I have made my first Linux contact here. Once in our own place I intend to begin searching through assorted eductional instutions to locate other Linux and F/L OSS users. And, being in my mid-70's I hope to find and assist other seniors. Like most students our money is limited so we should be, and hopefully are, a target group even as students are. We too can give back to the community by spreading the word.
