LUG in Watertown NY?

Just reaching out to all the Linux users in the Upstate NY area (Watertown, Thousand Islands, etc) who might be intertested in starting a Linux Users Group. There was one that started about 5 years ago but it died out a while back.

Let me know if there is any interest. I would love to get one started again.

Regards,
Dominic Uliano

C'mon Guys!! I only had one email reply on the starting of a LUG in Watertown. Maybe everyone was busy with the nice weather but we will all be cooped up soon. We might be able to have the meetings at Westelcom.

Let me know

I hit Google up for "LUG watertown NY" and I got this page. Nifteh.

I think it'd be great to start a LUG up here.

Problem is, I honestly don't know how many trueblue GNU/Linux buffs there are around here.

Kinda feels like the technological backwaters of the country sometimes.

Lug in Watertown

Thanks for your reply. A few years ago a LUG was started by the folks at IMCnet. At the first meeting I met a lot of people (mainly teenagers and 20 yr olds) who had phenomenal technical skills and were very enthusiastic about Linux. The group lost momemtum for a number of reasons but I still think there is a large enough Linux/open source community up here to have a very good LUG. I just wish they would speak up so we could get something started.

If we could get a small group, say 7 to 12 people, then I would be happy to do some legwork to find a place where we could meet and hopefully have a meeting.

Perhaps you have a few friends that would be interested?

Regards,
Dominic

Unfortuneatly, not many. Only a couple are interested, and nobody is really [dedicated, savvy, insane] enough to use it....

I'll ask around, though. I'll see if I can rustle up any interest.

It'd be nice, too, if a LUG were started, that it wasn't tied to any one specific business.

/m

Thanks Silverhammer. I will poke around too.

As for a place to have meetings. I know the Principals of IHC Primary and Intermediate very well and I am sure we could use one of the classrooms as a starting meeting place.

Talk to you later

Thanks Andy - How about us working together to get something started?

Dodgeram01 12-30-2004 05:22 PM

If you guys are able to get a LUG started, I would probably be able to attend at least a few meetings.

duliano 12-30-2004 06:02 PM

Thanks - it looks like we at least have 3. Do I hear 4.....5.....6

Dodgeram01 12-30-2004 06:20 PM

I might be able to convince one other person to attend, but I'm not sure how serious he is about Linux. So, maybe 4 ;)

duliano 12-30-2004 06:53 PM

We can work hard to convert him!

One of the questions I've encountered is what exactly would a LUG do? I know some have install fests and that sort of thing. But what about the rest of the time?

duliano 01-13-2005 06:39 AM

I think once it got off the ground there could be guest speakers, install fests, cluster builds, that sort of thing. But it all depends upon the membership and what everyone wants to do. I know that some of things I am interested in is gaming on linux, AMD(64bit) and Itanium computing on linux, clustering and HPC.

I would hope that group (if there ever is one) would have their own ideas and passions that would drive the LUG
