looking LUG in Woodlands to Huntsville Texas area

I live in Riverside but looking for a LUG in this area, Woodlands to Huntsville would be fine.

I assume that HLUG at HAL-PC inside the Loop north of the Galleria is out of the question.

There are 7 meetings a month, 9 if you count Samba. Which if any, have you been too?

How much Linux experience do have?

Does the 1960 PC group have anything of interest?

thanks for the reply, at the present i have not been to any group, i am a new user and have no experience, i live too far from the galleria area, i will check out some of the schools if a lug does not work out.

Where or what is "Riverside"? -- I live inside the Loop & anything north of the Beltway qualifies as "South Dallas".

Hi Rick,

I live in Riverside, it is a small town on Lake Livingston. Its about 19 miles from Huntsville and 7 miles from Trinity. I go to Conroe all the time, so that drive is not bad. Its almost 70 miles to the Hardy toll road. I dont think anyone out in this area can work a computer so me finding a Lug are slim. Thank you for your post. I have chose PCLinuxOS as my preferred distro. After I learn more I want to do a dual boot with Xandros. I liked them both so well I had a hard time settling with one. I joined their forum and I am getting a lot of support there. I am still looking for a class to enroll in. Good luck to you and your group and keep being kind to the new ones. It helps alot to have encouragement. This is like learning a new language. I listed Houston as my area because I have a home in Deer Park that my family lives in. I stay here most of time.

See my e-mail about location/transportation.

I'll be very interested to hear about your experiences w/ Xandros -- it's on my short list of candidates to be "The One".

"The One" meaning the HLUG standard recommendation to regular "Winders" users (or is that usees?) trying to switch. This has nothing to do w/ what we might recommend to someone w/ advanced knowledge or special needs; & most emphatically w/ what we choose for ourselves. Personally, I have been using SimplyMEPIS; there are several of us who are partial to Kubuntu; & in spite of resistance from a couple of purists, I think we should give Linspire a chance.

In case it's not obvious from the list, Debian based, i.e. .deb, & KDE are mandatory -- RPM & Gnome distros need not apply. No flames please ;), just a way to reduce the breadth of the choices. & BTW, even our staunchest RH/FC dude is is behind this way of narrowing the field.

Yes I read the location of class. I am no where near that area. Thanks but that is just too far. I have been using PCLinuxOS. That is the one I have installed. Its very user friendly. I have got it online now with a dialup modem. All seems to work fine. I do like Xandros just about as much. I intend to use Xandros as much as PCL. I hope after a few months I can make a finally decision which one will replace all OP's. Thank you for tring to help me out. With this forum and the PCL forum it has made it very easy to get to where I am at. Thanks to all. For those out there that need an internet that helps a bit with linux I am now using ARCZIP in the USA only. They have step by step instructions on how to set up the Linux emails and the modem. Also I chatted with two Customer Service people and they both use Linux Distro's.

The group for northwest houston met and is planning to meet again on the 20th on May. Four of us showed up.
As an alternative until something in your area materializes, you might subscribe to our mailing list:

We can answer specific question you have.

There is a group at TAM. You might check out the school at Huntsville. What is east of you? Might be a junior college? I'd try notes stuck on bulliten boards in grocery stores, autoparts, anyplace.

Come join us next month. We met last time close to 290 and 1960. One of the guys lives in Humble so we are trying to move east some and have an eye on a place near 1960 and Perry Road.
I live near Plantersville so it is about 30 miles to Beltway 8.
