Looking for a LUG in Houston, Texas
Does anyone know of any Linux user groups in the greater houston area? ( more specifically one in north houston [ The Woodlands, Conroe, or Spring preferable ] )
I just nailed the crap out of a job interview yesterday working in an IT department at a local marketing company; they use a lot of Linux/ Open source software there so I want to start attending a user group so I can learn more about the OS. Hopefully it will help me with my job.

yeah, I sure as hell aint gonna drive all the way out to RICE to go to a Linux user group. Besides, they're kinda arrogant about their school. blah, oh well..maybe there's one in the woodlands that's just not listed there.

I found a LUG at Texas A&M and if you live in the Woodlands it is a short drive up 45 to 105 and Navasota the aggie land.
HAL has a linux group that meets near the intersection of 610 and San Felipe.
Maybe we should see if we can get something going in the north part of the Houston area.

What kind of activities does the HAL-PC Linux Group engage in. I have been a member of HAL-PC for about a year. I live NE of Houston in the Crosby area. I would be interested in the Linux group as well.
Thanks, Jeff

I didn't have enough gas to make it out there today. If anyone goes to the meeting @ san filipe leme know how it went. That's a bit of a drive from conroe..
Maybe we can organize some type of group to meet at Montgomery College? I'm the president of the colleges Association for Computing Machinery ( www.acm.org ) and i think there are special interest groups that specialize for linux...maybe we could see about tying it in? I'm not sure really..I can check with professor fernandez if anyone thinks that might work. Anyone else have some ideas?

It has been about 5 years since I attended. Before you make any final judgements for your self check it out your self.
I walked away with disappointment. I only went to the Wednesday night support work shop 2 or 3 time. I had someking of problem I don't even remember now.
I felt like I was considered an outsider. Maybe because of the old male ego thingy. I did not know what I was doing, I did not know anyone and I wasn't going to ask for directions. Some guy grabbed me and tried to convince me to use the distribution he had put together. That left a sour taste in my mouth.
The one time I did attend a regular monthly meeting about a year later, I did not find a linux group meeting.
I really rather you judge for your self. If you make a Hal meeting please report back.
Dave

What do you know about the one in the Woodlands. No use reinventing the wheel.
