zapping_lirc: Access denied

Hi,

I run Ubuntu 5.04 with zapping for watching tv. I have a Pinnacle PCTV tv card which works fine. I also have set up Lirc, to be able to use the remote control that came with the tv card. I'm having difficulties to get the RC to work with Zapping. When I start zapping from a terminal by typing:

sudo zapping

and then I start the plugin for Lirc, everything works fine.

But when I just use

zapping

and then I want to start the plugin I get an error message saying:
zapping_lirc: Could not connect to socket.
zapping_lirc: Access denied.

For some reason a regular user has no access to zapping_lirc. Can anyone tell me how change this?

What are the permissions on the lirc device? Try this as root:
Code:
chmod 0666 /dev/lirc*

Hi,

I only have a /dev/lircd. The permission on that are already set to 0666.

That's weird, I've always had /dev/lircX, could you post the output of:
Code:
lsmod | grep lirc

There you go. In /etc/modprobe.conf or whatever Suse uses to probe modules on startup, you'll need to add lirc_dev and the modules for your remote. If there isn't a module for yours specifically, just load the generic one (lirc_driver maybe...?) and then your conf file should be enough for it to work properly Once you've done that, you should get a /dev/lirc0 device which will need to be chmodded to 0666 so everybody has access to it
