yum update fractionable?

Using a dial-up connection with an external modem my average data transfer rate (incoming) on a good day is 5kb/sec. When I try to update big packages (like a kernel sourc or kdelibs) depending on circumstances I get an ETA of several hours!! Is there any way to fraction download (directly or through a download manager) to avoid losing it all if I lose my connection or simply cannot wait that long at a given moment?

I haven't tried this since I am on a DSL but you can run "yum check-update" to check to see what packages need to be updated/upgraded. Then go find a fast network connection and download those packages and burn them on a CD. Mount your CD and tell yum to look for those packages on it...

there's an idea. How do I set up a yum repository or simply tell YUM where to look?
