yum has slowed down
hi all,
I am running fedora8 on a acer laptop.
I use yum GUI to install and remove softwares. However, offlate yum is taking too long to load repository data - upto 5- 10 minutes and often fails or hangs during dependency check stage of software downloads.
what could be the problem
thanks in advance

From the command line there are too many connect failures....seems like it is an issue with the mirror.
The intriguing fact is that the same mirror works fine from my office, but is not working at home ! so is there something else to it ?
thanks

Could be a route issue. Are any other sites besides downloading packages slow? What about any other downloads?

yeah ...now that you say so, I am seeing that google is also slowing down. If I click on a link the progress bar at the bottom of the browser shows the progress of the download and it remains blank for about 10 to 15 secs. It then slowly fetches and loads the page.
what could be the problem here ?

It is probably a problem with your internet connection. Run a ping test to google: ping www.google.com -c50
If you see any packet loss you have your answer. With a little work you can track down where the loss is. Do a traceroute and then step out from your system(folling the hops in your traceroute) until you find the source of the packet loss.
