Unhappy Yum hangs for all commands

I'm using fedora core 4.

Yum hangs for all commands. I'm trying to install a package and yum always get stuck and cause the PC to freeze.

I've looked at various threads and tried the following:
1) in the rpm directory I ran the rpmdb_recover to clean the directory of all __db files.
2) I loaded the latest version of yum
3) Updated the kernel manually using the latest rpm.
4) removed all repos from the yum.repos.d except the fedora repo's and the current package repo.

Does anyone have any suggestion or has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks
Tristan

Did you check if it's really an rpm lock-up (using rpm in a terminal)?
I don't think rpmdb_recover can fix that, try removing the __db files manually:
#rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__*
#rpm -vv --rebuilddb

... if you did that using "rpm -i", it's probably not an RPM problem though.
Does "yum clean all" freeze as well (or does it show an error message)?

You do know that FC4 is no longer supported and that there are very few repos that still carry active (or inative) stuff? Support for for even FC5 will be dropped at the end of June.

Yum Problem

Hi

I don't beleive its an rpm lock as I can use rpm's if i manually install packages using rpm -i <package> etc.

I've also have deleted the __db file manually and have tried the code suggest in this thread namely:
#rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__*
#rpm -vv --rebuilddb

But yum still won't upgrade or install anything.

I ran a strace on yum update an got this:
"
open("//var/cache/yum/dueca/primary.xml.gz.sqlite", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 4
fstat64(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
open("//var/cache/yum/dueca/primary.xml.gz.sqlite", O_RDWR|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE, 0644) = 5
fstat64(5, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
_llseek(5, 0, [0], SEEK_SET) = 0
read(5, "", 100) = 0
brk(0x9b61000) = 0x9b61000
brk(0x9b60000) = 0x9b60000
...
"
after that the last two line repeat and increment, which I think causes the hanging of the machine. But I have no idea what it means

Thanks
Tristan

Do you really like yum?
I find it the worst package manager available for RH/Fedora.

I can't really help you with yum specific problems since I've never used it (Its dependency handling is just horrible.).

If you want to keep Yum, remove it entirely and install a preconfigured yum package that is known to work.

It's your system, but I really recommend using SMART instead of yum:
