Yum Erase - Many packages deleted

Hi I did a

yum erase python

i resulted in deleting over 300 packages, I found out the server was responding weird to common commands so I stopped the erasing process but it had removed 100+ packages by then.

Now my server wont recognize common commands like ll ls etc neither do my websites work.

Please helpout.

python is a mandatory software for most recent systems. A lot of applications are actually python scripts, even yum itself! If the erasing process didn't remove yum and related stuff, your best bet is to check the file /var/log/yum.log to see what packages have been erased and reinstall them all.

Thanks for your reply, yeah i was able to view all the deleted packages from the log. However whatever package I try installing, I get a message:

/usr/bin/python: error while loading shared libraries: libpython2.4.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So I tried to install python 2.4, but the configure command will give errors as:
./configure: line 93: chmod: command not found
./configure: line 99: rm: command not found
./configure: line 177: chmod: command not found
configure: error: cannot create configure.lineno; rerun with a POSIX shell

I guess I have really messed up the system. Any suggestions?

Restore the machine from your backup. Would be the fastest and easiest way to resolve the issues.
I have not used RPM-based distros for some time (last one was Fedora 3, I think), but doesn't yum show what it will delete when you issue such a command and ask for confirmation?

I am on CentOS 5.

I had no backups, so I did a clean installation. The main problem is now to copy all the sites & databases etc but it can be done.

Thankyou all for your help.
