youtube-dl <urlopen error [Errno -2] Name or service not known>

Hello forum! I have some issues with youtube-dl recently. I get this error when I try to download a video:

Code:

ERROR: Unable to download webpage: <urlopen error [Errno -2] Name or service not known> (caused by URLError(gaierror(-2, 'Name or service not known'),))

youtube-dl version is up-to-date (2018.02.11)

But I don't know how to fix this. I found nothing on the internet about this error and youtube-dl.

My operating system is linux mint 17.3 as seen in the pastebin link.

EDIT: This error is inconsistent! It appears in some videos not all of them! So it has to do with youtube. The question is do we know what is blocking youtube-dl but not other programs?

Can we start with some basics. From your paste.

Does this crash?

youtube-dl -f 140 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygdVEIrVnIk -o file.m4a

Code:

ffmpeg -i file.m4a -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k out.mp3

Looks like maybe you are trying to download and convert at the same time.

no this does not crash and yes I was trying to download and convert with this command:

Code:

youtube-dl --extract-audio --prefer-ffmpeg --audio-format mp3 <link>

but I also get this error when I use a plain

Code:

youtube-dl <link>

and both commands work for some videos and some other they don't. So I am trying to figure out why is this happening.

Make sure that you are using the latest version of youtube-dl, and that you have python up to date. I've had that happen to me. UT changes all the time and the devs for ut-dl keep up with it.
