Youtube Browser for SMPlayer?

For a long time I was able to download video from Youtube using the Youtube Browser obtained from the repositories.
Now I find it no longer works. Does anyone know why we are no longer able to download video clips from Youtube?

Thanks,

gael.

Smtube until 14.8 uses some older Youtube API that was deprecated. You need the latest version (15.5 or something) compiled from source if you dont have it in the repos.
Or use youtube-dl from command line. That still works.

The youtube-dl command doesn't work and I have never had any success with compiling from source.
I have read more than a few tutorials on compiling and I still make a pigs ear of the procedure.
Perhaps it's because it's too technical for a 70 year old to grasp!

thanks,

gael

Use a online downloader till Ubuntu catches up on smtube.

or use VLC instead

Me. Running AntiX. I can do things you cannot in Ubuntu. Kinda ironic I guess.

Thanks for the reply. However, there appears to be a consensus of opinion that Youtube have changed their system in some way to stop the downloading of music/movie clips. I think in time some news will appear on the boards to confirm that. Hopefully, normal service will resume soon.

... another user just waiting for the next update that will magically solve everything ...

the problem with smplayer is that either smplayer's development isn't catching up with the new youtube api, or the smplayer version available for linux mint is older than the newest available.
you do, btw, always update your system properly?

there's about half a dozen other solutions to your problem.
i always liked trizen's youtube viewer with command line & gtk versions.
be sure to look at "Availability", there's a ppa for mint/ubuntu.

aside: i use mpv these days, instead of mplayer. mpv ftw!

Youtube-dl always worked (and still works) on Debian at least. The new Smtube downloaded from its site and compiled manually works too.
