Your opinion: Best distribution build kit?
Other than Rock Linux that I can't get to work well, what distribution build kits have you used that worked well for you?
I've been asked to build a custom distribution for internal use with only a few apps. Sounds easy, right? No, I can't use anyone else's distribution, I must build a custom one for the company and just install off that CD.
Thanks for your help,
r.

can't you "cheat" and just use slackware but remove the packages you don't need and edit the install script?

I've already tried that.
They are demanding their own branded "corporate distribution".

If you want to build your own kernel from scratch .. go to kernel.org .. pull out the tree .. use the patches you want and you have a kernel.
now use any distro to compile it and have a kernel ready .. use grub to do the install .
then start by picking the app's you want and you will be done .. I figure it will take a few weeks worth of time ..
do you want to share what's it's about ?

Basically, the company wants a Knoppix clone called {Insert giant faceless corporation name here]nix, make copies, give out copies to users, boot from it, and *bingo*, instant desktop.
They are fearful of all the apps already on the live CDs, they just want one with the Mozilla browser, a CLI box, OpenOffice.org, an FTP client, standard TCP/IP crap and a few other things.
I recommended modifying a live CD of Knoppix to suit their needs, but they demand they're own company distro so the PR people can create a press release saying "we're the first company to have our own distro!" Sun's desktop uses Morphix, Sun just branded it. This company dosen't want to hear it.
Ugh.

if you had a moddified knoppix it would still be their own distro...
Sounds like they want their own proprietry OS whilst using all the free software and compatibility that linux provides access to.

but there are companies who are doing it .. I presume you are talking a hardware vendor.
Take a look at pogo linux, I am sure they have their "own" distro. I am certain there are at least 10 others :-))

I've heard wonderful things about Linux From Scratch, like Sheng-Chieh mentioned. Why not try that?
God, I feel sorry for you. This seems like an arduous task.

Linux from scratch has an excellent book about building your own. It's called Linux From Scratch.
