You own widgets

Hey guys, I was wondering how I might be able to go about creating my own widgets. Before yall flame me, I know I can select one and pico edit it to my needs, but I want to get more of a learning experience out of this desire. I'd like to write something simple and quick.. just a small vertical rectangular window displaying text info about my system. I see there's this "development" section in my kmenu. Would I use one of those to write it in? Or can I just use the konsole, create a new file, write it tehre, and save as whatever.theme? Also, which language would I use? :\

I meant more towards widgets that one would load with super karamba.. or conky that u can run in xfce. I was hoping to write a simple little something.. script, app, i dunno what exactly it'd be called.. but i'd like to write something that'd appear on my desktop, like a widget or conky, that would display system information I choose to incorporate.
