No, what you said was "log in to the GUI". That is not - repeat NOT - what I said.
It is never - NEVER - necessary to log into the GUI as root. When I said "establish a root session" that has nothing at all to do with the GUI.
You open a shell window as a user, then do an su to root. Then you do what you need to do as root, including opening/running apps that use the GUI. Only that session and what it spawns has root privileges; the remainder of the session (which includes everything that you use to connect to the internet) has only user privileges.
