YEE HEE! Mandy9.2 on UK coverdisk!

Due to the postal strike in the London area (I'm not gonna have a go at the guys, you lose a lot of money when you strike and you don't do it unless you've no alternative) I have not had my copy of December's Linux Format delivered to me yet. (Yup, like all computer mags it has an unreal grip on the fourth dimension, time.)

However, I saw it on the shelf in WH Smiths, and the first two discs of the download version are on the cover (CD Version) and the entire download version is on the DVD Version. And you get a nice magazine with it. All for about 6 squids!

Those of you in the "Rest of the World", be envious. Be very envious. Or take out a subscription (they do send it abroad). Visit www.linuxformat.co.uk

that's very cool.

i have a bit of a story about linux and coverdiscs actually.
The first time i heard about linux and got interested in it was when my dad bought a copy of PCanswers, which featured a copy of what it claimed to be mandy 6.2.
actually, i think they were just short of material so decided to stick something on.
It was infact the mandrake floppy images, base packages, kernel excetera, but the installation app and RPMs were from RedHat 6.2.
anyway, i found the rawwrite/floppy images most exciting, and cupied myself for months reading the HOWTOs on vi on my old p/90 system that didn't have a hard drive, so i had to boot into DOS from a floppy, then boot into linux rescue mode from the CD, and then load vi and read the HOWTOs.
a great way of learning and i loved it.
then i moved on to zipslack, cygwin, and BasicLinux (a lot of fun).
Then about 3 months ago i got fed up with win98 and the viruses (which helpfully wiped out the registry and all my documents) and decided to dual-boot win98 and redhat.
i had already downloaded redhat 9 because i wanted to build a linux router on my old p/90, for which i had been given a hard drive, which i dropped a screw on whils it was lying face-up and very much on, therefore frying it (don't worry, it was a 120MB from an old 486 that my mates wife wanted him to get rid of anyway).
I know redhat would not fit in 120mb anyway, but what did i know.
anyway i had the discs, so i just wiped everything, installed 2 copies of win98 (1 4 my many siblings, 1 4 my games), and redhat 9.
in the 3 months i've had it i have used windoze maybe once or twice, but have been using linux every day.
i now cannot bear to use windoze, because anything i do, it just crashes.
also very annnoying is the intolerance towards hardware changes, i installed my new mobo yesterday, linux was fine, i just had to run redhat-config-sound to redetect the sound card, and thats it.
windoze, on the other hand, did not like it, after 30mins of clicking through stupid "windows has detected new hardware" messages that do no good at all i decided to reinstall, yet it still can not use the secondary IDe, much to the annoyance of my siblings who use CD-ROM based games.
one benefit though, is that my brother has expressed an interest in learning to use linux ( i think he was attracted to legends (http://hosted.tribalwar.com/legends).

P.S.
'tis good to hear from a fellow briton on these forums
