Yahoo Messenger?
Okay, I had just gotten Red Hat 9 online this morning only to find out that my Yahoo Messenger did not work. In terminal, it came up with a segmantation error. It would not load at all. I followed the uninstall instructions by deleting the "ymessenger" directory, which it did not explain which one, so I deleted everthing that said "ymessenger" as the directory except for the install .rpm. Now that I followed those instructions, I cannot re-install because the .rpm tells me that the packages are already installed. I tried using GAIM to get to my yahoo, but even that didn't work. Is there something I'm missing here? I feel rather lost in this one.
If I can get all of my messengers (AIM & Yahoo) to work properly, I am almost ready to make the complete move from MSWin to Linux, which is a very appealing goal to me.
If somebody can help me, please do. I have checked all the help files, posts on linuxquestions.org, and resorted back to the original documentation for RH9, but nothing has helped me fix this.
Is it possible that I may have to re-install RH to make it stop saying that the Yahoo packages are already installed? If further details about my system are needed in order to answer this, please let me know.

I had that issue....
uninstall: rpm -e ymessenger(versionetc.).rpm
Once you install the thing, you "should" be able to see it in the internet section of the menu in X and activate accordingly.

gaim sounds like what you're after...you might need to upgrade the package to the latest which is..... i think .79 now, but it handles aim, yahoo, msn, icq and others...

I just tried that, here's what terminal said...
# rpm -e rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm
error: package rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm is not installed
# rpm -i rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm
package ymessenger-1.0.4-1 is already installed
I get the distinct feeling that RH needs to make up its mind whether this thing is installed or not, but it seems to me like it could be looking in separate locations to see if it is installed and I may have missed something when following Yahoo's uninstall instructions. I am not quite sure how or why it would look in different locations though, but that's just one of my possible theories as a technician.
Any other suggestions?

As for Gaim, I tried installing the lastest version, which I had installed prior to my recent format and re-install of RedHat, but now all it comes up with in terminal is...
# rpm -i gaim-0.78-0rh9.i386.rpm
warning: gaim-0.78-0rh9.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 883c1c14
error: Failed dependencies:
gtkspell is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libgtkspell.so.0 is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libnss3.so is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libnss3.so(NSS_3.2) is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libnss3.so(NSS_3.3) is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libsmime3.so is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libsoftokn3.so is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libssl3.so is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
libssl3.so(NSS_3.2) is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
mozilla-nss is needed by gaim-0.78-0rh9
And the same thing with "-U" instead of "-i"
I do not understand why this .rpm worked fine before, but does not now. But to tell you the truth, I would prefer to stay with ymessenger. I am much more familiar with it from MSWin, so although from my previous positive experience with gaim, I would rather see Yahoo.

I finally found why YIM seems to crash. dunno if it will work with you. Yahoo will seg fault easy. it does not tell you why. really. anyways. when you install the RPM. it is installed. then in terminal. goto '/usr/bin/ymessenger' ..... it will ask you to add it to gnome/kde. if you do not use gnome. or do not have gnome. it will seg fault. as if you have gnome and you don't have KDE. Took forever to figure this out. lol. if you just have gnone. or if you just have KDE. make sure the other is unchecked. If one or the other desktop is not installed. Yahoo IM will Seg fault. if you do not have java install from sun java. it will segfault too. so first. install sun java. if yahoo was already installed that is fine. it should still find it. if not. install sun java. then remove the YIM rpm. then reinstall it. Make sure you check mark only 1 of the 2 desktops. if you use KDE. Checkmark KDE only. If you just have gnome. make sure your '/usr/bin/ymessenger' does not have KDE selected.
I am using KDE. it is the same though. Vice versa. the Link Yahoo puts on the desktop may not work. if it does not work. make a new link to a application. '/usr/bin/ymessenger' . then log in from there. I have not seen any Yahoo help that tells you about this. Now. that you deleted parts of the package. I am not really sure how you should go about this. Remember. it is like windows. If you delete parts of a windows proggie (installshield). you cannot uninstall it proper thru (installshield). If you install it with a RPM. you have to uninstall it with RPM. to save headaches.
Now your GAIM problem. The dependecies problem is like windows. Windows needs certain DLL's for that proggie to work. Linux needs dependencies. Different slang. same thing.
GAIM. you will need to install atleast the RPM or tar.gz (windows slang zip or winzip) of GTK 2. libssl problems should be resolved with installing openssl. libnss may be resolved installing the latest mozilla or netscape. Most of these are preinstalled. except say the mozilla or openssl. GTK 2 is used by more then just GAIM. As I say personally. Yahoo IM, I thought was screwed forever. Then I tried setting it for the desktop that I only had installed or one of the 2. then it worked fine. KDE or gnome has a installer that allows you to install/remove/update. in the install search for GTK, open ssl. etc. you should be able to install a RPM premade for your OS. it is faster if you have to tar.gz it. less headaches. if not. then install it manually. Sorry. I speak Canadian. lol. YIM. you gotta find what you deleted and look at what you missed then reinstall the rpm. But only select one to save you from the dreaded seg fault. I know some that had this install proper with KDE and Gnome on both. but. many others had problems. install on only KDE or gnome. Sorry for talking in circles.
Nemoswitch.
