Y Windows system - anyone tried it?
http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~mbt99/Y/
Its presented as a replacement for X.. I see it requires SDL. Doesn't SDL need xlib? How can you code something and say its a replacement for something that it uses? I mean hats off to someone who'd attempt it and I think its a great idea, but SDL!?? |
Well X has it's short comings I'll give the guy that but a school project meant to overtake X that thus far has only a shell and clock and a calculator. Does not compile. Is on version 0.1. It also says devel has stalled...but should resume in november...hmmm I think we will be waiting for this gem.
I did hear though it was while back that some Xfree hackers split to form an updated forked X implimentation...but I haven't heard anything since. But I would welcome an alternative to the aging X server. |
As already has been noted, Y is a school project. Its goal is to prove a point, more than being a usable replacement for XFree86...like most university projects. ;)
Keith Packard's Xwin project (an XFree86 fork) seems a lot more promising. Håkan Edit: Sorry - I was a bit quick posting the URL there - I meant to post Xouvert, not Xwin (of which Xouvert is a project). |
I think Xwin may be the fork I was refering to. The name packard sounds right. Thnx for the link Hakan!

Yeah, I mean X is ok but it would be nice to have something faster and with a standard higher-level toolkit.
I'll keep my eye on Xouvert anyway. |
I might be a bit off the track, but I had a look into some xfree replacement called directfb ?
It seems to run on frame buffer and be a lot smaller than your common xfree . Have a look at it here http://www.directfb.org/ cheers bareego ;) |
yep, directfb is cool, i have been playing with it. I have mplayer working on it and their demo app called DFBSee...an image/video viewer.
