xwindows startup problem
Hi all,
i'm in desperate need of some help. Okay the situation is this. I have installed Redhat 8.0 on my pc for about 1 week now and everything was working fine. Until yesterday when i had the following problem. The system would boot normally, with a lot of green okay, then when it reaches the part where it is suppose to go into xwindows, the following happens: The system tries to start xwindows, you can c the monitor going black, but then the display goes back to the black part before it attempted to start xwindows. it keeps on going like this, i.e attempt to start x and then fails, even if i leave it at it for a while. I really need some help in resolving this prob :(, i have just configured my system to a point where i really liked it, and hate to start all over again . My hardware specs are: Intel P4 2.53 Ghz S3 savage 4 60 Gb hd are these enough or do i have to list the while thing ? Thx Penguin Power |
When lilo or grub comes on the screen, do you have the option of failsafe? If so, choose it, and boot into the console. Then, you can try the command startx and see what errors you are getting. If your /etc/X11/XF86config-4 file is causing the errors (probably is), you probably need to run xconfigurator to set it up again.

If you don't have the failsafe option, typing your kernel image's name followed by a space and then "init=/bin/sh" (at the lilo prompt, if you have lilo) should drop you into a command prompt where you can edit your x86config
Don't know if this is possible in rh 8, but if it is it might help |
will ty
i'll try the suggestions and let you know :)
