Xwindows problem Debian 3

I tried to install the xwindows system on a remote server running Debian 3 using the handy apt-get. While the install seemed to go fine, afterwards when I tried "startx" it usually hangs on a line that says

AUDIT: Sat Aug 27 01:44:02 2005: 30834 X: client 4 rejected from local host.

other times it seems to run fine. but when trying to run xclock over SSH with X11 forwarding I get "X connection to localhost:12.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)"

I've never really worked with xwindows before and can't seem to find any hints on google on what to look at, any help would be appreciated thanks!
