xwindows mouse not working in vmware

I know this is a noob problem kinda but i think i will get a better response in here. I finally got x-windows working with vmware (vmware installed in win2k machine, red hat 8 installed as guest operating system) except for my mouse. I have a belkin standard ps/2 mouse. Two buttons and a wheel thing in the center. When i boot up now it goes straight into gnome since my xwin is working. My pointer comes up in the middle but as soon as i move it slightly it snaps to the top left hand corner and then freaks out when i try to move it. I run mouseconfig from a terminal but pretty much any ps/2 mouse i select does the same thing. Also, does this change become effective as soon as i exit mouseconfig or do i have to reboot?
