xwindow refreshrat change?

hello, i want to change the refresh rate of my horisontl(sp) refreshrate, i think thats what it is. and i know how to, i just dont know how to keep it at the highest it can go for my resolution. it doesnt seem like its at the highest it can been. and it hurts my eyes. but anyway how can i make it use the highest it can? not just typing in a number but for that resolution.
