Xvesa troubles

On the system I am building, I have an Xvesa binary that I downloaded, and it starts up fine. However, whenever I try to run any graphical programs (I have tried window managers and xterm), I get the following error:

Int 10h (0x4F01) failed: 0x014F (function call failed)

can anyone explain this error message or tell me how I might go about getting this stuff to work?

thanks
