xv grab garbage

I recently wiped out my old Debian installation and reinstalled. I use xv a lot and it works fine with one exception: the grab feature returns a window full of garbage. Apparently this is a known proble and there are two patches that claim to help but after Installing both the problem remains.

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?
