Xubuntu - Installing packages with Synaptic Package Manager.

Hi all.

I have Xubuntu 6.06 running on a IBM 390E 330 Mgh P11 256Ram 6 gig drive. The desktop is Xfce and it’s all working after an easy but slow install.

My problem is installing the Ndiswrapper-1.47 and OpenOfficce 2.2.1 I have downloaded the packages and uncompressed them on to a CD, the file manager reads the CD with out problems. Unfortunately SPM will not even look at them so how do I get them to install?

SPM seems to be listing programs as compatible with 6.06 but that is as far as I can get.

Any help please with a neubi's dumb question :) :)

Thanks Alan

Thanks Sepero.

But it's not much help, until I can get the wrapper installed I cannot go online.

I have the packages waiting but SPM will not pick them up off my CD drive or pen drive.

I may need to do a command line install, can you point me to the instructions? :( :( I'd much rather use a package manager!!!

You can post here, so you can watch the video, right?

Mmmm..... Yes I watched the video, that's why I know it's not much help but I'm on line using my XP box.

As I said I have downloaded what appear to be the right packages, I've transferred them in both packed and unpacked states to a CD and to a pen drive and SPM will have not even look at them.

Sorry for any confusion.

some progress, these packages are not .deb's so it looks like I've got the wrong ones :( :(

1. Ubuntu/Linux software does not install the same way as Microsoft software.
2. You should learn how to use the proper way Synaptic eventually. (There are 1,000's of online tutorials. Do a search.)
3. Do this to get your OO and ndis running immediately:

-Connect a wire to your Linux computer (reboot)
-Open a terminal
-type 'sudo apt-get update'
-type 'sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-modules-1.9 ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 openoffice.org -y'
