Xterm Terminal


Does anyone know how to start KDE from Xterm terminal when i already have X-windows system running. Help is needed. Thanks a lot.

aslong as no other window managers are running you should be able to do it with the command "startkde".

What window manager are you in when you want to start KDE?

It normally isn't a good idea to start one window manager from inside another one. The start command for kde is startkde unless your distro does weird things with it.

The standard location for that is /opt/kde/bin but some distros do use non-standard installation locations so yours may be someplace different. Never used FC so not sure about that.

Why do you want to do this? Wouldn't it be easier to use your log-in manager? kdm and gdm both allow for session selection at log in.

yes, it would, But here is the story. I am logged in into the linux box remotely using VNC. All I can get is an xterm window (command screen). From Xterm I can run any application, and it likes just normal, only without the window borders. I can run firefox, gkrellm, everything. Just need to start KDE or GNOME.
