xterm: freetype error displaying hypens?

When I run xterm with the -fa option, hypens (such as those in man pages for many commands, and in mutt when displaying threaded messages in the main listing) are displayed as "boxes." I was thinking maybe this was a unicode or font issue, but I have not found a solution yet. However, I notice that gnome-terminal, displaying a font of the same name ("monospace" in this case) had no problems displaying hypens. And running xterm without indicating an -fa (freetype) option, causes hypens to be displayed correctly in mutt, though not in man pages (displays a space instead). Any thoughts or solutions?

-fa = freetype option ?? this aint the way it is in my xfree 4.4.0 xterm

explain exactly what you mean -- what command line switches and whas in your ~/.Xresources concerning xterm

wouldn't you rather use a better version of xterm like rxvt or something ?
