xterm customization

I want to have xterm start without a title bar... i've searched around on the internet, but everything has to change the text in the title. I assume its something that I could add to ~/.Xresources being that is were I was able to set the default font colour, background, ect. So if anyone could help me out, id greatly appreciate it! thanx, in advanced, for you time!

P.S. if anyone knows how to do this with another terminal program, gnome terminal for example... that would work as well

I could be wrong, I *think* the title bar itself is a window manager feature -- not an application feature. What's displayed in the title bar is an application feature.

ok, so would i be able to make gnome not display a title bar just for xterm? or any program for that matter?

You can blank the title in gnome terminal by using its menu. Open a gnome term, then

Edit->Profiles->New : name it : ->Title and Command

Set Initial title: blank it
Dynamically-set title: Isn't displayed

Seems like you should be able to, but I have to confess, off the top of my head, I don't know how to do it in Gnome. You might try poking around in /etc/X11/gdm -- maybe in gdm.conf? (sorry)

Edit: Or more likely, /etc/X11/xdm

Heres a bit of an update, I tried using gconf-edit to change the configuration of gnome-terminal. there is a title, and title_mode setting. By default they're set to string. title is the text that appears and title_mode is how it is to be displayed, after, before, hidden. I tried changing them to boolean and false, but I get an error stating it was looking for a string not a boolean expression. I tried changing the string to "hidden" "false" nothing has worked... is this a lost cause??

You might want to look into a program called devil's pie. You define rules for what to with certain programs and it will modify them. Stuff like defining positions and size for windows, starting with them pinned on all desktops. It also includes the option to remove the window decorations.

The unfortunate thing is that the official documentation kind of sucks. There's a decent walkthrough on the ubuntu forums here, but pay attention to the bottom of the first post. The new version of devil's pie significantly changed the way you define rules. There's another guide that I found last night that's a bit better for the new version, but I forgot to bookmark it, and don't have time to google right now.

mcmillan, devil's pie worked great! a took a little searching to find how to configure the new version... but i got the look i wanted =D its really a neat little program for making your desktop look how you want it to when the window manager just can't do it (or should i say when i don't know how to do it =P ). thanx for the info mcmillan! :)
