Question xsltproc, is it possible to create indexes on the XML file?

I have a program that's breaking up a big XML file by taking passes at it with xsltproc.

The problem is it needs to pull parent and child groups out thus I have to search for them with the xpath.

:eg "/node/node[parentName='$uid']"

Any way of generating an index on parentName for xsltproc to use, without throwing it into a database?

Remember that xsltproc applies stylesheets to XML to perform the transformation. So, your question seems more of an XSLT question than one about xsltproc, specifically. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Can you explain what you're trying to do in more detail please? I don't really understand what you mean by "generating an index on parentName". Posting some of the input XML and the desired output after transformation would help.

No. I would suggest, "just get it as efficient as you can get it ... look closely! ... and then, let it run."
