xserver with Nvidia driver 6629 won't load glx?!?!?!?

About 2 weeks ago I did a complete system update using 'aptitude' (Debian's ncurses based front end to apt, dpkg and debconf); after it finished downloading and installing everything.... the fun began ;-)

At the time I made my system upgrade I was using Nvidia driver 1.0.6111 which I downloaded from Nvidia's site. Everything worked perfectly and it wasn't the first time I did a system-upgrade using aptitude. However, after this last upgrade my xserver broke.

During the install process I noticed that aptitude installed (among others) the following packages:

*nvidia-glx 1.0.6629
*nvidia-kernel-2.4.27-1-386 1.0.6629
-kernel-image-2.4.27-1-386 2.4.27-2 (I'm using a custom 2.6.8 kernel; don't even have a precompiled 2.4 kernel in my system)
*nvidia-kernel.-common 1.0.6629
*nvidia-kernel-source 1.0.6629

So I downloaded the newest Nvidia driver (1.0.6629) and installed it. During the install process the Nvidia-installer warned me that the original installation of the 1.0.6111 driver had been altered and that he would attempt to remove the previous installation as best as possible before installing the new driver. The nvidia-installer finished the installation without further problems. I did a 'sanity' check off the recently installed driver and everything seemed to be fine... but it wasn't.

My xserver wouldn't start anymore. I removed the above mentioned packages and reinstalled the driver, but my xserver still wouldn't start (I've tried other things, but if I write them down this post would get even longer ) Long story short: it seems that the problems lies in the glx module that doesn't seem to load (see XFree86.o.log and /var/log/gdm/:0.log on subsequent posts) but I can't figure out why.

I would appreciate any help from you guys and if you need additional info just say so

May be stupid, but I have the Option "DPMS" in the Device part and not in the Monitor part for the newest nvidia driver. also the device identifier is rather long. Coudnt you give it a shorter name and put the long name in the device section as Vendorname?
Another question would be if you used (or better said the automatic installer) the prebuilt or compiled by yourself.
Also I would first try to kick out as many modules as possible. May be one of them is in conflict with the nvidia driver.

Good luck
Lars

Thnx for the suggestions Lars, i will give it a try when i get home (the pc in question is my home desktop)

By the way, the long device identifier was choosen by my xserver after runing 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' when i first installed debian (back then i was trying to fix a mouse problem ^_^) Never had a problem with that name before, but i guess it wouldn't harm to change it to something shorter

About the nvidia-installer.... I'm not quite sure if i understood your question (maybe it's just because i'm still such a noob ) I downloaded the 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run' file from Nvidia's website. Since I'm using my own custom made kernel, the nvidia installer told me it would compile the driver for my kernel. It went through the install process like always, showing no apparent problems.

Well, got to get back to work now. Thnx for the help

No, you got me correct. I wanted to know if the installer started to compile or if he has used an prebuild driver. Due to the fact that you have your own made kernel he compiled.
When he does this he takes the source code of your Kernel and compile for that specific kernel the modul. If your source present is not the one anymore you are using it will not run.
May be that you have tried to compile several kernels, but used one of the earlier ones and not the last kernel you compiled, then the installer used the wrong configuration for your
nvidia driver. Hope that is clear. To repair this you need to put back the Kernel source configuration to that status of the Kernel you use and run the installer again.

Alternative there exists also an driver for nvidia cards in standard packages, called nv. just try him by changing your XF86Config from Driver "nvidia" to Driver "nv" and loading
the Modules GLcore abd dri again, because they are not included in that driver.

Good luck
Lars

The kernel sources correspond to my currently compiled kernel. There should be no problem there. I tried your suggestions, but i still can't get my xserver up.

Since i've been trying to get the 1.0-6629 driver to work without any success, i decided to install the 1.0-6111 driver (which had worked for me without any problem). After installing the driver and typing 'startx' in the CLI.... see there! everything worked again.... at least i thought so.

Like i said, everything was back to normal: no problems, no glitches, no fuss, no mess (i even played Q3). After verifying that everything was OK, i rebooted my PC. When the boot process got to the point of loading the xserver, it gave me the same error messages as stated in my first posts.

I noticed that the nvidia installer creates two files in /usr/lib/tls:

libnvidia-tls.so.1
libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111

However, during the boot up process a message saying something like "removing NVIDIA TLS LINKS" appears and, like i said, x won't start and the above mentioned files have been erased.

I suppose a init script is messed up, but since i'm still a n00b i don't know which one Guess i will have to read some more to find out

Okay, this localises the problem. Now you know where to look for. obviously it uses the wrong libaries. check out in the log files from the startup, which links are removed. Try to sort out why he does this.
there I do not know either.

I would do (not recommended):
Reinstall the 6111 and then copy the new files over the old. If he then reboots he may eliminate the links, but the files he uses will be still the 6111. Do not forget to save that files before overwriting as an *.bak-file.

Other possibility is the windows repair-system: Reinstall all new

else, check out what the init script for level 5 does. to be honest I prefer to start always first in level 3 and start the xwindows afterwards.

And for beginners I recommend normally Mandrake (10.x currently) and Redhat. they are simple as Windows.

Sorry, that I can not help more.

Good luck
Lars

Hello y'all

Sorry for not posting sooner, but i have been quite busy

The good news is, i fixed my problem

Like i mentioned in my last post, the nvidia installer (using the 1.0-6111 driver) creates the following files in /usr/lib/tls:
libnvidia-tls.so.1
libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6111
which are deleted during the boot process.

I tried Lars's suggestion of making a backup of these files, but without success. So i took a look at the init scripts and stumbled upon these lines in /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx:

Code:
remove_links () {
  # check if all the symlinks are gone or correct
  if [ -e /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.$VERSION \
	-o -e /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so \
	-o -e /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 ]
  then
echo -n "Removing NVIDIA TLS links..."
    # remove the symlinks
    rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libGL.so
    rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.*
    rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libGL.la
    rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libGLcore.so.*
    rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so
    rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.*
    # reconfigure dynamic linker run-time bindings
    ldconfig
    echo " done."
  fi
}
I commented out the following lines:
#rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so
#rm -f /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.*
...and....... everything worked again!

I don't really know the purpose of these two lines (they just delete the files created by the 1.0-6111 driver o_0), but uncommenting them has given me no trouble. I haven't tried it, but it seems obvious to me that in order to avoid the whole "Removing NVIDIA TLS links..." process (which in my case isn't really necessary because my /usr/lib/tls directory only contains the two files installed by the 1.0-6111 driver) i will have to comment out the whole 'if' statement; it's something that shouldn't break my system, but who knows .

This thread started out with my problem with the 1.0-6629 driver.... don't you think i forgot about it At least i found a good starting point. Still, if everything seems to be 'doomed to hell' i can always come back to the 1.0-6111 driver

Thnx for all the help Lars
