Unhappy xscreensaver weird problems

I am trying to use xscreensaver but implementing for me has been very difficult.
I have followed the directions at http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/ to make xscreensaver automatically start in kde. Xscreensaver does automatically start and runs properly with the .desktop link in the home/... /.kde autostart directory but if I reboot the system hangs and doesnt shut down properly. The result is I have to hit the restart button and fsck has alot of work to do.

Funny thing is if I dont automatically start kde and instead wait till I am fully logged in and run xscreensaver everything works and I dont have any problems restarting.

Logic would seem to dictate that a script that starts xscreensaver after I am fully logged in might help but I lack the knowledge to do that. Simply making a script using say,

#!bin/bash
sleep 5
xscreensaver &

just seems to make the kde login/start up process wait for it so it doesnt work.

If this problem stinks of something you think you know how to correct or if you know how to write a script that waits till I am completely logged in than can you please help me out. I have been trying to fix this for along time by placing scripts and adding to scripts but so far nothing has worked

Try putting the code below in your .kde/Autostart, with the name .xscreensaver.desktop
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=xscreensaver -nosplash &
Name=XScreensaver
Type=Application
Please state the Linux distribution that you are using and the version, so that you can get more accurate answers.

Yes I tried the code above and also tried various forms of my own simple scripts that tried to make sure that there wasnt various instances of the daemon running all seem to work but they all seem to cause the system to freeze during the reboot or give a segmentation fault both of which force me to do a hard reset. I placed them in my .kde/Autostart folder and also tried a few other places to try to get xscreensaver to start after kde was fully up and running.

If I start Xscreensaver each time manually with the shell it seems to help and I dont get the freeeze on reboot.If Xscreensaver is taken out of the equation I never have a problem restarting.

OS Distro: Suse linux 9.3 (sorry I should have provided this info but I usually post to Suse/Novell)

System: Asus P3V4X (VIA chipset has given me nothing but headaches)
Asus Geforce 256
Nvidia drivers 1.0-7174
