XScreensaver stops when window not moving

I am having a problem with xscreensaver where it looks like there are windows over it but they are black. Basically I see tiny pieces of the screensaver in little parts of the screen. And it is choppy.

I have an nvidia 6800 gt pci-e. Direct Rendering is working, so im not sure whats wrong. When i demo a screensaver with xscreensaver-demo the screensaver works fine as long as I move the window around the screen. Otherwise there is no motion until it moves. Its really wierd. Anyone have any ideas?

Nobody has answered yet, so here's my 2c:

This looks like it might be an interrupt conflict problem.
Take a look at the output of dmesg to see what interrupts are being allocated where.
lspci -vvv might also be helpful.
Have you tried booting with the noapic kernel option? - You'll need to tweak your bootloader (grub or lilo?) and add noapic to the "append" line.
apic stands for "Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller", and sometimes it does not work properly.
