Xrender and X

I am attempting to get GTK installed on my Mandrake machine but keep running into installtion problems. Frist it ws Pango now Xrender. I look for it as source first found it but got the error that "X was not installed or disabled" even though am using it. Then I looked on my CD's wasn't there. RPM find found no RPM's either. How does one go about installing Xrender on Mandrake 8.1. Just in case I am using KDE.
