XP Pro SP1+ Redhat 8.0 dual boot problems
 

Hello I am brand new to linux and i chose redhat to start out with so I downloaded the 5 cds(never used 4th or 5th???) and installed it on a partition i made with partition magic pro 7. Anyways when I boot i get the option for Redhat or XP and when I choose XP i can boot fine, but when I try Redhat I get this:

what i suggest is that you start from scratch
partition the disc so that you have 2 partitions install windows on the 1st preferably using fat32 rather than ntfs this is because linux can read and write to fat32 but can only read from ntfs

then install linux onto the second partition and use grub as the boot loader both operating systems will then boot up fine

reformatting is not the solution to everything, so i refuse to reformat over a simple issue such as this :/
thanks for the input but I rather fix the problem than remove it from play, anyone else have any ideas?

What boot laoder are you using? I would say that gurb is the best for a windows dual boot.

I had the exact same problem. I upgraded to GRUB .93 and was finally able to boot. You can get it from here:

sorry, how do I install this without being able to get into a linux o/s? floppy boot right?

Why can't you get in with your boot disk? If you boot from floppy and get to a point where your screen is just black and you can't do anything but a hard boot, then you system is booting to the graphical interface and you have video issues also. (I'm working on that one right now.) I, being a newbie, didn't know how to force a boot to the command prompt. Therefore I reinstalled RH8 to boot to the text prompt. Then I was able to boot from the floppy and install GRUB .93 to achieve a normal boot. Now I am working on the Nvidia driver issue in order to get X started.

Hope this helps. If anyone knows how to force a floppy boot to the cmnd line when it's set to boot to X, please let us know.

arg, i still cant get this to work... do i need to boot from the floppy or something? i cant upgrade grub when Ihave no acess to the files(they wont all fit on a floppy)
