Xorg, xinitrc not being initiated

Howdy all,
I have a custom system, with a custom install of Xorg, running from a CD.

The problem is that I used to be able to run startx and any program after that if i stuck it in xinitrc. But after switching some readonly/readwrite things around, i cannot get Xorg to start correctly. What happens is startx works up until the point that you would expect it reads the xinitrc file...but in the end it runs these things:

1876 ttyp0 S 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
1889 ttyp0 S 0:00 xinit --
1890 ? S< 0:00 X :0
1893 ttyp0 S 0:00 xterm -geometry +1+1 -n login

There is no .xinitrc or anything in the home dir, and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc can be edited, moved, deleted, etc. and it will still just run the above. Xorg.conf has not changed. Is there any reason why it wouldn't be looking for the xinitrc file? Or is there a way i can tell if it is trying to run it but it isn't working successfully? The log file shows nothing.

Edit: the xinitrc file itself seems to work if i put it in /root/.xinitrc ...would there be any reason why xinit doesn't find it in the default (/etc/X11/xinit) dir?
