Xorg vs. XFree86

I am currently using XFree86 version 4.4, and I am considering switching to Xorg. I have a few questions regarding Xorg:

How is Xorg related to XFree86?
What extensions does it support? Specifically, does it support Xv, GLX, and DRI?
Is there any NVidia support for Xorg? Can Xorg use XFree86 drivers?

I have done a quick search and could not find the answers.

at least the NVidia driver works great, I installed the official driver from NVidia for my 6800 card, wich is not any problem with x.org. Note that the NVidia driver doesn't have official support for the 2.6.9+ kernels (there's unofficial support though, check the forum of NVidia for that). Don't know about the extensions, I just installed the driver.

As long as I know XOrg is based on XFree86, maybe a newer version of XFree86 and an opportunity to change it's name.
I guess there will be no problem about changing to it.

Even the Xorgconfig file is a simbolic link to FX86Config file.

That's what I think.

X.org is based on Xfree 4.4 rc something..
anyways, the last version before Xfree changed their license.

Development on Xfree86 was already slow, and has now pretty much stopped.
X.org is where all the new futures are being added, so...

Works great for me

I've been using Xorg on Slackware 10 for a while now. I got 3D accelaration to work on my ATI Radeon 9600 XT card without much hassle (after I finally decided to follow directions). Everything seems to be basically the same as with XFree86, though I hear that Xorg is friendlier to open source and will theoretically be less buggy due to superior development.

There's my two bits.
